Year 6 FOBISIA Maths Competition

The Year 6 students of Epsom recently showcased their mathematical prowess at the highly competitive FOBISIA Maths Competition held in Jakarta. Over two days of intense challenges, our students demonstrated exceptional problem-solving skills, teamwork and perseverance.

The first day of the competition was packed with thrilling challenges. Students engaged in maths investigations where they had to prove two mathematical statements, pushing their logical reasoning to the limit. They also took part in a construction challenge, designing and building structures using prisms—ensuring that the surface area of the base was smaller than that of the top. One of the standout events of the day was the mathematical split relay, a fast-paced and dynamic challenge that was a highlight of the competition. The day concluded with an individual paper, testing each student’s mathematical understanding and problem-solving abilities.

The excitement continued on the second day with the Campus Chase, where students participated in a series of short-burst mathematical activities. These included a countdown round, sudoku and currency conversion exercises, amongst others. The varied challenges required quick thinking and adaptability, ensuring an engaging and enriching experience for all participants.

Beyond the competition, the students had the opportunity to learn about Indonesian culture. They participated in making an ‘Ondel-Ondel’ puppet, a traditional Betawi icon, and engaged in traditional Indonesian games. This cultural experience added an extra dimension to their trip, allowing them to appreciate the local traditions and customs.

Our students had a fantastic time, embracing each challenge with enthusiasm and resilience. They effectively applied all of their Epsom Learning Characteristics, including perseverance, collaboration and critical thinking, making us incredibly proud. A special mention goes to Jiyun C., who placed third in the Individual Speed Round and achieved a gold medal in the Individual Paper—a remarkable accomplishment!
