Prep School STEAM Week

This year’s Prep School STEAM Week was a huge success, filled with hands-on experiments, creative projects and exciting problem-solving challenges. Each subject brought a unique perspective to our theme of adaptation and innovation, inspiring students to think critically and creatively.

Our young scientists explored the theme of “Change and Adapt” through engaging experiments. They investigated how animals use camouflage to survive, tested how pulleys can reduce the effort needed to lift objects, and even tackled an environmental challenge—learning how to filter microplastics from water. These activities encouraged students to think about how living things and technology evolve to overcome challenges.

Art day was bursting with colour and creativity as students explored adaptation through visual projects. They experimented with salt art techniques, designed ink-blot dart frogs, and created their own camouflage creatures. These activities combined science and creativity, reinforcing the concept of how organisms blend into their environments to survive.

Technology lessons took an exciting turn this week with students applying their digital skills to real-world challenges. Our youngest learners in EYFS trained an AI model to recognise fish and avoid plastic pollution in the ocean, while Year 5 designed a Scratch game highlighting the importance of protecting marine ecosystems. These projects helped students see how technology can be a powerful tool for conservation.

Maths lessons were transformed into thrilling adventures as students tackled escape rooms and problem-solving challenges. These activities encouraged teamwork, logical thinking, and perseverance, making maths even more exciting and engaging.

The first week of STEAM Week concluded with a challenge that pushed students to apply their knowledge to real-world issues. Each year group worked in teams to solve a problem, and Year 6 particularly impressed us with their innovative floating gardens—designed to help communities affected by flooding continue to grow crops and sustain their livelihoods.

The grand finale of STEAM Week brought incredible learning opportunities. Year 5 students visited the secondary science labs, where they used microscopes to study cheek cells and understand how our bodies have adapted. EYFS and Year 6 enjoyed a special lesson from Year 10 students on animal adaptations, while Years 1-4 conducted a fascinating density experiment in the lab. Additionally, students took part in the TT Rockstar “Rest of the World Rocks” competition, testing their times table fluency. Finally, our Prep School STEAM Fair showcased the amazing projects and discoveries from the week, celebrating our students’ creativity and curiosity.

STEAM Week was an inspiring experience for all, and we are incredibly proud of our students’ enthusiasm and innovation. We can’t wait for next year’s adventures in science, technology, engineering, art, and maths.
