How Do the International Prefects Promote Culture and Community?

At Epsom, a culturally diverse community, our role as International Prefects is to promote and celebrate the unique qualities of each background. Through implementing annual personal projects, we aim to strengthen the bonds between everyone through shared cultural values. We would also like to share some insights on how we plan to enrich cultural exchange within the school in the upcoming term, especially during Culture Week.

Contributing to school events aligns with our responsibilities. For example, our Deepavali celebration video highlights the diverse perspectives of many students and teachers. Through collaborating with Mr Richardson, Shiloh J. has developed a project that provides a personalised support system for Korean students who need English assistance and experience homesickness. The project aims to help students adjust smoothly to school life, foster cultural understanding, and build lasting mentor–mentee relationships across grades. We hope to expand this initiative to include Japanese and Chinese students in the future.

It is our motivation and privilege to initiate events that highlight the importance of each distinct culture. Looking ahead, we aim to establish several more culture-related events. One upcoming initiative is the International Food Sales, where we will sell different traditional cuisines every fortnight to showcase one of the most significant aspects of a country’s culture. The project is now under discussion with the Food and Beverage team, and we hope to launch it as soon as possible.

As food sales transition into Culture Week, we are excited to organise Culture Day — an event where students dress in their traditional costumes and enjoy a vibrant bazaar along with inspiring musical performances throughout the evening.

Being International Prefects has shown us how powerful culture can be in bringing people together. Every shared story, festival, and tradition strengthens our sense of belonging. We hope to continue creating moments where students feel proud of their heritage and inspired by others’. Together, we can shape Epsom into a community that truly celebrates the beauty of diversity and connection.
