Celebrating Diversity

As an International Prefect, our primary role is to ensure that students feel comfortable and supported in their new environment. This involves organizing social activities, providing a listening ear for any concerns, and fostering a sense of belonging among the diverse student aggregate which spans 30 nationalities from all continents (but for Antarctica). Our goal is to help students navigate their school life without the burden of homesickness, making their transition as smooth as possible.
One of the key responsibilities of an International Prefect is to organise activities and events that bridge cultural gaps and create opportunities for students to bond. Epsom is a school rich in cultural diversity, with students from countries such as China, Malaysia, Korea, Japan, Myanmar, Singapore, and the UK. This vibrant mix of cultures allows us to celebrate our differences and learn from one another. A standout example is our annual Culture Week, as well as frequent Open Mic Nights, where students have the chance to showcase their heritage through food, games, performances, and discussions. These events not only allow students to share their culture but also promote collaboration and unity among peers from different backgrounds. The diverse languages and traditions present in our school make these events an enriching experience for everyone involved. For example, the recent Valentine’s Open Mic Night allowed students to sing love songs in different languages, creating a space where music transcended cultural barriers and fostered mutual appreciation. On that note, we must express our gratitude to Lion Dance by Kelab Tarian Naga Dan Singa Ching Wan (Ching Wan Dragon and Lion Dance Club) for their recent Lion Dance performance in Epsoms theatre. These shared experiences help to strengthen the sense of community and inclusivity within the school, making it easier for students to bond across cultures. Furthermore, one of the most important aspects of being an International Prefect is offering emotional support. Many international students feel isolated or homesick while away from home. As a reliable listener, we provide support to ensure they know they’re not alone. This emotional support is vital for their mental well-being and academic success, especially as they adjust to new languages and cultures.
Being an International Prefect allows us to contribute to the creation of a harmonious, supportive environment at Epsom. Through cultural activities, emotional support, and fostering a sense of unity, we ensure that every student feels valued and connected to the school community. It’s a rewarding role that brings diverse perspectives together in a meaningful way.
