Building a Legacy: Our Vision for the Academic Year
Sameer
Having insurmountably big shoes to fill, the coveted Head of College position is a dream come true. In Epsom’s decade since its inception, the school has paved the way for countless students to pursue their dreams throughout the world.
As we step into the new academic year, especially as Year 13s, it feels as if everything is passing by so quickly, and the expectations that we set upon ourselves for the universities that we are going into feels slightly overwhelming, however it is without a shadow of doubt that we are aptly preparing ourselves for this challenging road that is ahead of us. From a different perspective, now we, as the Seniors of the school, have the opportunity to build a community that is self-sustaining and holistic. As Prefects, we intend to provide the students, regardless of their age, a platform where they can voice their opinions and ideas, and explore new avenues of talent in which they may have the potential for. We believe that every student deserves the chance to explore the caverns of their interests, in the chance that they might find a gem or two along the way.
We look forward to a year filled with activities and projects that will greatly benefit the school community. From Epsom Union, a competitive public speaking society, focused on refining rhetoric, presentation and public speaking skills, to the production of our very own KS5 short film, this upcoming academic year looks to be a year filled to the brim with new experiences and opportunities. As this is our final year here, we hope that the mindset and the belief of creating a community, a big family, that can support each other during times of need is continued by the juniors that will ultimately be in our place next year, and the years after. We hope that our efforts will leave a positive impact on Epsom’s legacy for the years to come.
After all, who are we, if not the marks we leave behind?

As we embark on this new academic year, we’re not just continuing Epsom’s decade-long tradition; we’re also contributing to a legacy that will last. As the prefects for 2024/2025, our focus is on fostering a welcoming and inclusive community through a variety of social and academic events, ensuring that everyone — students and teachers alike — feels safe and supported. Epsom has been that kind of environment for me, offering a sense of belonging that I believe is key to both personal and academic growth.
This year, we’re thrilled to launch initiatives that highlight the importance of diversity, equity, and inclusion. One such initiative is Unity Week, designed to strengthen the bonds within our school community. Another is Eco Week, aimed at raising awareness about global warming and exploring practical ways we can all contribute to solutions. These initiatives will not only bring us closer as a community but also help educate students on crucial global issues, from gender divides to environmental challenges.
On the academic front, we’re committed to boosting support for all students. A major project we’re excited about is the Epsom Union, a public speaking society where students can refine their rhetoric, presentation, and speaking skills in a competitive setting. These monthly sessions will provide a taste of what university-level debates are like, allowing students to dive deep into topics they are passionate about. Additionally, sixth form societies in areas like Business, Media, Maths, and Sports will offer students opportunities to broaden their horizons and engage in meaningful discussions. Through these efforts, we aim to ensure that every student, no matter their background or previous experiences, has the support they need to succeed.
As prefects, our goal is to work closely with both students and teachers to enhance the Epsom experience. By genuinely listening to and understanding the perspectives of everyone in our community, we hope to create an environment where each person can thrive, both academically and personally.
