Balancing Prefect Duties and School Life

Being an Admissions Prefect is both an honour and a responsibility. We work closely with the Admissions and Marketing teams to ensure that visitors to Epsom have a warm and insightful experience. However, balancing these duties alongside A-level studies can feel overwhelming. The key to success lies in teamwork, time management, and emotional intelligence. With the right support, it is possible to excel in both leadership and academics.

One of the main responsibilities of an Admissions Prefect is organising student-led campus tours for prospective students and their families. We also assist in planning key events such as Open Days and Induction Days, ensuring that new students and visitors feel comfortable and welcomed. The most rewarding moments come when we see the smiles, laughter, and excitement of both visitors and newly enrolled students, knowing that we have contributed to their positive experience at Epsom.

In addition to admissions duties, prefects take part in social events, personal projects, and community initiatives. Balancing these commitments alongside coursework, university applications, and exams can be challenging. However, with a strong support system—whether from fellow prefects, teachers, or friends—it becomes manageable. By working together and supporting one another, we create an environment where responsibilities are shared, and no one is left behind.

Daniel Goleman’s concept of emotional intelligence is especially relevant in this context. Understanding ourselves—our strengths, weaknesses, and limits—enables us to manage our time effectively. Likewise, developing social skills helps us support our peers, communicate efficiently, and build meaningful relationships within the school community.

Ultimately, balancing prefect duties and school life is about finding the right support system, prioritising tasks, and developing essential leadership skills. While the challenges are real, so too are the rewards. By embracing our roles with enthusiasm and working collaboratively, we not only contribute to the school but also grow as individuals, preparing ourselves for future responsibilities beyond Epsom.
