Our History
Royal Patronage
Epsom College is proud and honoured to have received unbroken Royal patronage since 1855. Queen Victoria was the College’s first Patron and, ever since, we have been honoured to have the reigning monarch as our Patron.
His Majesty King Charles III has become the Patron of the Royal Medical Foundation of Epsom College, succeeding Queen Elizabeth II. The news was announced to mark the first anniversary of His Majesty’s Coronation.
Our Founder: Dr John Propert
The origins of Epsom College can be traced back to the unwavering dedication of Dr John Propert, who sought to enhance the lives of those facing adversity. Driven by his tireless efforts, he extended free housing, clothing, and education to the orphans of medical families, laying the foundation for the noble legacy of the College.
Through the visionary efforts of Dr Propert, crucial funds were mobilised, marking the inception of The Royal Medical Benevolent College. The enduring principles of benevolence and excellence, rooted in the Victorian era and upon which Epsom was established, continue to illuminate the path of the College to this present day.
The Royal Medical Foundation
The Royal Medical Foundation, based at the College, continues to play an active part in school life. The charitable foundation was built through generosity and a dedication to improving the lives of the individual and society, values which remain at the heart of the College today, reflecting our unwavering commitment to kindness, integrity, and opportunity for all.
The College Archives hold a wealth of photographs, artefacts and ephemera from Epsom’s past. This ever-expanding gallery allows you to travel back through our heritage and celebrate our tradition of academic excellence, character development and global citizenship.
