Reflecting on this term, there were many responsibilities we faced when managing the prefect team as a whole. This included coordinating duties, staying organised and ensuring that every prefect has contributed effectively with their roles. These experiences not only developed our key leadership skills, but also gave us valuable insight into different management styles, such as motivating a team and ensuring that each task is completed on time to a high standard.
One of the major challenges we faced was communication. Especially during exam season, exams were crucial for our predicted grades and university applications. During this period, we had to make sure that everyone remained on the same page regarding their responsibilities for upcoming events. At the same time, we had to consistently motivate the team to volunteer for tasks while respecting their own academic commitments.
In order to improve transparency within the team, we held weekly meetings and organised work flow charts for lunch duty and assembly rotas. Through this system, each prefect had a clear indication of their responsibilities. Even though some prefects may have other commitments at times, our team became eager to cover duties and support each other.
When organising events around the school, our team maintained a rule: everyone available helps out. Although each department may organise different events in school, the whole team will always be there to help with both planning and execution. Regardless of the department leading the event, everyone supported events such as Epsom Live Talks, Open Days and various socials.
As Christmas is just around the corner, the prefect team organised a series of events dedicated to celebrate together with the students. Through countless free lessons, meetings and practice sessions at night, our team prepared a Sixth Form Christmas social, a performance and a secret santa gift exchange with over 100 attendants. The whole team came together and dedicated extra time to support our social prefects to accomplish all of this.
Through term 1, our group of prefects developed a strong sense of community and teamwork. From small details within meetings to hosting school-wide events, the prefect team put a lot of thought and effort into meeting our commitments and responsibilities. We look forward to bringing more joy and memories for the Epsom community in term 2!
