Settling in After the Break

The start of a new school year is always full of energy, new faces, and plenty of opportunities. Wilson House has welcomed 36 new students this academic year. With a growing House, a strong induction is key, allowing students to settle in, feel comfortable, and get to know the community around them. By taking time to welcome students properly, we give them the best chance to start the year feeling confident, supported, and ready to succeed.

The induction process is about far more than simply finding classrooms and learning routines; it is about helping students feel part of something bigger from the very beginning.

House competitions, such as cross country, football, and puzzle challenges, have been especially valuable. These events bring students together across year groups and encourage everyone to take part, no matter their skill level. Running side by side in cross country or working as a team during a puzzle challenge helps new students quickly feel included. Victories are celebrated, but more importantly, friendships are made and confidence grows through shared effort.

We had some brilliant individual successes in the Cross Country from Georgina D. (2nd Seniors), Mei U. (1st Juniors), Sonia J. (2nd Juniors), Ezra A. (2nd Inters) and Mamika (3rd Inters). Beyond the individual successes, what made us most proud was watching the girls support each other, cheering them on and looking after each-other post-race. Regardless of the result, the Wilson Girls have modelled our motto of ‘Respect, Integrity and Resilience’ and for that, we are so proud.

Leadership opportunities within the house have also supported induction by allowing students to take responsibility and act as role models. Following an Assembly on Monday, we have opened applications for many leadership positions across Key Stage 3 – 4. These roles help to guide younger students, showing them the traditions and spirit of the house. Watching older students lead with kindness and enthusiasm inspires new members to see what they, too, can achieve. We look forward to announcing our new leadership structure in the coming weeks.

Finally, the in-house family system has been one of the strongest ways to help students settle. By placing younger students into small “families” with older peers, everyone has someone to turn to for advice and support. This structure not only provides reassurance but also creates lasting bonds that extend well beyond induction week. Together, these elements ensure every student feels welcomed, connected, and proud to be part of their house.

Induction is more than just settling in, it’s about making sure students feel prepared, connected, and valued. When we take the time to welcome students properly, we give them the confidence to grow, achieve, and enjoy their school experience. The friendships, skills, and memories made during these first weeks will continue to shape a successful and happy year ahead. We look forward to our first proper year as a Wilson community.
