Last week we came together for a whole school assembly to celebrate Teachers’ Day. Prior to the event students had voted to nominate their teachers for the following awards:

  2. "The Jedi Master Award" for the teacher who has mastered the art of keeping their students in line with a wave of their hand.
  3. "The Golden Snitch Award" for the teacher who always manages to find a way to solve any problem or challenge that comes their way.
  4. "The Walking Encyclopedia Award" for the teacher who seems to know everything about everything.
  5. "The Simon Cowell Award" for the teacher who always gives the most honest and sometimes brutal feedback.
  6. "The Drama Queen/King Award" for the teacher who has a flair for the dramatic in the classroom.
  7. "The Superhero Award" for the teacher who always goes above and beyond to help their students succeed.
  8. "The Human Calculator Award" for the teacher who can do math calculations in their head faster than a calculator.
  9. "The Master of Puns Award" for the teacher who always has a clever pun or joke up their sleeve.
  10. "The Zen Master Award" for the teacher who can remain calm and collected in any situation.
  11. "The Tech Wizard Award" for the teacher who is always ahead of the curve when it comes to incorporating technology into their lesson plans.
  12. "The Fashionista Award" for the teacher with the most stylish and trendy wardrobe.
  13. "The Memory Lane Award" for the teacher who can recall every student's name, grade, and even their favorite subject without missing a beat.
  14. "The Captain Hook Award" for the teacher who always manages to hook their students' attention and keep them engaged.
  15. "The Storyteller Award" for the teacher who can captivate their students with the most engaging and imaginative stories.
  16. "The Magic Touch Award" for the teacher who has a special way of making even the most challenging concepts seem easy to understand.
  17. "The Multitasking Maestro Award" for the teacher who can juggle multiple tasks and responsibilities with ease.
  18. "The Zen Garden Award" for the teacher who creates a calm and peaceful atmosphere in their classroom.
  19. "The Social Butterfly Award" for the teacher who always goes above and beyond to build strong relationships with their students.
  20. "The Master Motivator Award" for the teacher who knows just the right words to inspire and encourage their students.
  21. "The Class Clown Award" for the teacher who never fails to make their students laugh and brighten up their day.
  22. "The Super Organizer Award" for the teacher who keeps their classroom and lesson plans perfectly organized at all times.

Our New Heads of College Sameer and Woorin, ably assisted by the outgoing Heads of College Elliott and Jing Yan presented the winners with a sash.

It was great fun to see who had been nominated and who the final winner was and students actively engaged with applause and drum rolls as the winners were announced!

At the end of the assembly our ever supportive Friends of Epsom gave every one of our teachers a goody bag to take away with them. I would like to thank them on behalf of our staff.

I want to acknowledge how much we value all our staff and how grateful we are for their unwavering support of and care for our students. As a boarding school, the role of our teachers is even more important as they provide care and support beyond the classroom and long after the normal school day is done.

The importance of great teachers as pivotal contributors to society cannot be underestimated. Teachers not only pass on knowledge, but foster critical thinking skills, inspire students, serve as role models, and play an integral role in the holistic development of the children in their care.

As students grow and discover the myriad possibilities life offers, teachers are there to nurture their curiosity and ambitions. This influence makes teachers crucial members of our society. The foundation laid by teachers shapes the future of generations and contributes significantly to the progress and prosperity of the broader community. Their impact extends well beyond the classroom, resonating throughout society as they empower tomorrow’s leaders, thinkers, and contributors.

I am sure that as you read this as a parent, you can recall a teacher who played a pivotal role in your life. That teacher for me was Mr Clive Thomas. He was my Physics and Electronics teacher at A-level and it is because of him that I entered the profession and am here today! I do not doubt that the influence of Epsom’s teachers will shape our students’ futures and we thank them for all they do!

A Message from our Leadership Team - Mrs Avis Parker

If this is the answer, what is the question?

  1. A city on the north east coast of Scotland where the rivers Dee and Don flow into the North Sea. It was the capital of the Grampian region of Scotland. It is the third largest city in Scotland. Its population is nearly 200,000.
  2. James Macphearson, the Scottish poet and writer is a notable alumni.

Firstly, if you are a parent, you may well ask why I have started my contribution to the Friday Flyer like this. However, most students in my classes at school will be familiar with this starter activity to get them thinking about a topic or theme we may study in class. Some teachers might call this the ‘grapple’; something that makes a student think and engage at the start of the lesson or the beginning of a topic.

Secondly, some of you will now be thinking ‘so what is Mrs Parker trying to make me grapple with and why?’. To this, I would ask the students if they had any ideas, so I will ask the same to whomever is reading this! Can you answer either of the questions? And can you tell me why this might be the theme of my Friday Flyer?

On Sunday, I fly to the UK to study full time for 6 weeks in pursuit of a Doctorate in Education. In my last Friday Flyer, I likened my journey here to the one many students encounter as they navigate their way through school, gaining new experiences and learning many skills along the way. The key academic skills we want students to develop at school are the Epsom Learning Characteristics which are competences for life-long learning. It is important to remember that you should never stop learning; it gives us all a sense of purpose. However, it is also important to realise that the journey to success is not always easy and you need to foster a sense of determination and build up resilience to hopefully achieve a great sense of accomplishment when you finally reach the finish line.

I do find myself in an unfamiliar situation, though. I have not physically been to a university for over 20 years, I have never been to the city where I am studying for a PhD. Moreover, I am travelling alone without my family which, in itself, is quite daunting. However, with a different spin on the situation, I can clearly see I have been given a wonderful opportunity to focus on studying as I embark on the start of writing up my thesis on the well-being of international students at Epsom College in Malaysia.

I have been blessed to work with some very patient and amazing students at Epsom this year as I have researched the well-being of Chinese, Japanese and Korean Students in the school. These students have given up hours of their lives to talk to me about what well-being means to them and how they achieve well-being on a daily basis. I have learned a lot about the students and about boarding life, but most importantly, I have gained a real appreciation for how special the school is through the eyes of the students themselves. The research is truly positive. It is now really important for me to give these students a voice in my research thesis. 

Why, you might ask? 

Most research on children and adolescents are done through the adult lens meaning that adults tell us about the well-being of children. It is much less common to uncover reality from a child’s perspective. The reason for this is simply that it is much harder to undertake research with children and, it is also true to say that, some researchers would argue that many children are not able to support researchers adequately with the answers they seek. I have to say that the students have been incredibly articulate as I have gathered data on their well-being. I have a real insight into the well-being of children at Epsom College in Malaysia. Now the analysis begins before I start to write my first chapter!

So, if you haven’t worked out the questions to my answers yet, I am travelling to the University of Aberdeen in Scotland, where I will attend a PhD conference and start to analyse the hundreds of hours of research that 18 students at Epsom College in Malaysia have shared with me. The finish line is August 2026!

Maths Department Updates

On Saturday 18th May, twelve Epsom students from Year 6, 7 and 8 travelled to the British International School of Kuala Lumpur to take part in the KL Junior Maths Challenge 2024. The competition consisted of some individual rounds, in which students had to work on their own; and some group rounds, in which the students were able to work as a team.

We took four teams; the Euclid Enthusiasts (Izz Imil, Edric and You Qian); the Fibonacci Fanatics (An, Nobu and Justine); the Achimedes Admirers (Sora, Anna Ruth and Yuzuki) and the Liebniz Legends (Aiden, Chanwon and Sachivan).

Here you can see Justine, Nobu and An completing ‘The Chase’; a treasure hunt involving escape rooms.

The final round was a ‘maths relay’ known as ‘The Dragon Round’ in which students had to solve problems as fast as possible. With music playing and students sprinting around the room; there was a frenzied atmosphere, which required students to remain calm under pressure. Here you can see the Euclid Enthusiasts and the Archimedes Admirers doing just that!

Sachivan (below) did most of the running for his team, the Liebniz Legends.

There were some particularly outstanding team and individual performances.

Best performing teams:

The Euclid Enthusiasts (Izz, Edric and You Qian) came 5th out of 25 teams in the overall team competition. Impressively, they placed 1st in ‘The Chase’ round and 3rd in the ‘Dragon Round’, so were unlucky to miss out on a podium finish overall. A special shout out must go to our Year 6 participants (Edric and You Qian) who were competing against students older than them. Bring on next year!

The Fibonacci Fanatics (Nobu, An and Justine) came 7th out of 25 teams in the overall team competition.

Best performing individuals:

An came 5th out of 75 students in the overall Year 7 individual competition.

Zhezhe (Aiden) came 7th out of 75 students in the overall Year 8 individual competition.

The standard was incredibly high in both the Year 7 and the Year 8 competition, so all of our representatives deserve high praise. They truly did Epsom proud and every one of them demonstrated they can compete with the most elite mathematicians in KL. 

Kangaroo Maths

Two weeks ago, the Kangaroo Maths Competition took place. A record number of Epsom students were entered into the competition, with 150 students taking part. The entrants were from all year groups; ranging from Year 5 all the way up to Year 13. All the students were put forward to the competition based on merit; they qualified by scoring in the top 20% of students within their year group in the first round, which was held earlier in the year. .

Preparation has been taking place for months, with Competition Maths CCA taking place during Term 1 and Term 3, whilst during Term 2 it was renamed Kangaroo Maths CCA to provide a specific focus for the competition.Thank you to Mr Bevan for running this CCA. Meanwhile, the Prep school students attended a weekly session with Ms Archibald.

There are various categories of paper for different year groups:

  • Benjamin (Year 5 and 6)
  • Cadet (Year 7 and 8)
  • Junior (Year 9 and 10)
  • Student (Year 11, 12 and 13)

The questions in Kangaroo Maths are challenging and fantastic for developing ‘out of the box’ mathematical thinking and problem solving.

Well done to all who took part and we look forward to receiving the results in Term 1 next academic year.

Propert House News

Living in a Boarding House is a unique experience that goes beyond mere accommodation. It’s a place where students form lasting friendships, grow independently, and develop a strong sense of community. One of the key values we promote, that contributes to a thriving Boarding House environment, is pride.

One way the boys display pride is through their uniforms, not only their Epsom uniforms with striped Propert blue ties but also our yearly House jerseys. To promote our fancy new Propert jerseys for 2023/24, the boys had a photoshoot which was posted on social media to increase the excitement leading up to the shirts' release!

Pride boosts morale and motivation among our Propert boys. A sense of pride in their environment and achievements motivates students to strive for excellence in all areas such as academics, sports, or CCAs. Celebrating individual and group successes builds confidence and encourages our boys to pursue their goals with determination.

Pride fosters a sense of belonging among students. When students take pride in their Boarding House, they feel a part of something larger than themselves. This sense of belonging is crucial in a boarding environment where students live away from their families. It creates a home-like atmosphere where everyone feels accepted and valued.

Pride in a Boarding House can enhance the relationships among students. When students are proud of their House, they are more likely to support each other and work together. This spirit fosters positive relationships, reduces conflicts, and builds a supportive network where students can rely on one another.

When students are proud of their Boarding House, they are more likely to take responsibility for their actions and surroundings. Pride encourages students to take ownership of their living space, maintaining cleanliness, and respecting shared areas. We can extend this idea further by extending our responsibility in our behaviours and interactives with the wider Epsom community and beyond.

Finally, the boys have pride in their teachers! Knowing that they are there for them day in and day out. Each with a different set of skills and abilities from a range of backgrounds and cultures ready to support and care for them!

Pride, when experienced healthily, plays an important role in our students personal development community building. It teaches them the importance of community, respect, responsibility, and excellence. These values shape character and promote their future interactions and efforts. Pride in their Boarding House becomes a foundational experience that students carry with them throughout their lives.

Crawfurd House News

As I reflect on two years as Head of Crawfurd there are lots of important aspects to cherish.

Firstly, the incredible students who create such a prosperous environment. From the youngest girls (aged 11) to the oldest (aged 19) they all come together daily as they strive to reach their dreams. These aspirations range from career focuses, University dreams, mastering English as a second language, taking on new challenges, researching further into subjects that inspire them, living away from home, making friends, having fun and, most importantly, realising their full potential. We especially celebrate the hard work and dedication of our Year 13 and Year 11 girls at this time - remembering that through patience you can break what is hard.

Our younger students are making great strides in improving their English and we can see how spending time off their devices in social situations is having a positive impact. I am very proud of each of our Crawfurd girls and as I walk around the House in the evenings, I can see how much our students have developed personally, since arriving in Crawfurd. Their confidence has increased, they know who they are and what they want to do and they have learnt so much through many shared experiences.

I would especially like to celebrate the dedication of our two matrons, Ms Parween and Ms Anisha. They both inspire me every day with their commitment to their role. Thank you for all that you do for our girls. You are greatly valued ❤️

Finally, I thank the continued support and commitment of our tutor team within Crawfurd who spend quality time with our girls during tutor time, supervision and activities. They are all amazing and create a safe environment for our girls to take risks and think outside of the box.

We look forward to celebrating, as a House, before the end of term with a trip to the local Dragon fruit farm as well as Mitsui Mall.

Marvelous Music at Epsom

Epsom Arts Festival

In the last week of the term, we will once again host our Epsom Arts Festival, a two-day celebration of engagement, enterprise, and excellence.

On Wednesday, 26th June, we will have Workshop Day. Instead of the usual school day, all students and staff will participate in a series of workshops related to the arts. Students can choose from a wide range of activities in Art, Music, Drama, and Speech, led by both our teachers and external guests. This year, we are excited to offer over 60 workshops, including Malaysian cultural activities like Kampong Drumming, Silat Martial Arts, a Bollywood-style dancing group, and a Malaysian choral expert.

Thursday, 27th June, is Performance Day. Parents and guests are warmly invited to attend and watch students from Early Years through Year 13 perform on one of the four stages. The day will kick off with a special Junior House Drama competition and conclude with the staff band performing on the Pavilion Festival Stage. Highlights of the day include an Art Exhibition, Drama Productions, Music Concerts, Food Stalls, and Games. In the evening, students will enjoy a BBQ dinner and Food Trucks by the Pavilion to celebrate the end of the academic year.

We encourage all students to sign up for the Festival and participate in both days. We are looking for students to help run stalls and activities on Performance Day, as well as take part in the many performances.

Who is Miss Munira - Performing Arts Administrator

Earlier this year, we were delighted to welcome a new member to the Performing Arts Faculty. Miss Munira has already become well-known to many students, staff, and parents, making a remarkable contribution to the Performing Arts at Epsom in the past six months. But who is Miss Munira?

What is your role?

I am the Performing Arts Administrator, responsible for managing the day-to-day activities of the Performing Arts Faculty. My role includes organising individual instrumental lessons, coordinating with visiting music teachers, managing resources and rooms in the Music and Drama departments, and ensuring everything runs smoothly so that the teaching staff can focus on providing the best experience for the students. Additionally, I help organise concerts and events, and I've been especially busy over the last few months preparing for the end-of-year Epsom Arts Festival.

What have you done before Epsom?

Before joining Epsom, I studied at Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM) and graduated with a diploma in Music (2015) and a degree in Music Education (2018). Throughout those years, my passion for music performance grew as I joined various symphony and wind orchestra events. These included playing in the Symphony Orchestra UiTM Composer Series 3 (2013), Wind Orchestra Notturna (2014), 81st Convocation UiTM (2014), Malaysia International Music Arts Festival at Genting Highland (2015), and performing with Sekolah Tun Fatimah Wind Band at Istana Budaya (2018). Additionally, I had the opportunity to join as a backup singer for Orkes Keroncong Arif Lukisan at the Silaturahmi Keroncong Art Festival (SKF, 2019).

After the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, I found myself drawn towards the field of music administration and management. I began working as an assistant administrator at music centres in Mutiara Damansara and Kuala Lumpur areas.

What instrument do you play?

I have played the clarinet in the orchestra since I was 18. However, the guitar has always held a special place in my heart, as it was the first instrument I began playing at the age of 15.

What is your favourite type of music?

I love listening to oldies pop songs like those by the Carpenters, as well as English alternative rock bands such as Keane, Kodaline, and many more.

How did you get into music?

I was born and raised in an artistic family. My father is a full-time artist who plays the double bass in a traditional keroncong music group, while my mother is the singer. I grew up following my parents to their performances. One day, I received my first guitar, and from that moment, my interest in music grew. Eventually, I decided to pursue a formal education in music.

What do you like most about Epsom?

Epsom is the first school where I have worked in an actual school environment. My first impression was that it is filled with friendly faces—teachers, staff, and students alike. I feel incredibly fortunate to have such supportive colleagues, who demonstrate great teamwork and collaboration. This environment motivates me to step out of my comfort zone, push my boundaries, and boost my confidence in handling my work.

Epsom - AUG University Fair

Girls U15 Basketball v KTK

On Tuesday, May 21st Epsom welcomed Kolej Tunku Kurshiah for the U15 girls' friendly basketball game. As it was a friendly game, we decided to give a chance to all girls involved in basketball CCA to play. This match aimed to increase interest in competitive basketball amongst U15 girls. The match was challenging, while we did not win this match, our girls tried their best and demonstrated a good level of basketball.

Another important output of the fixture is that we have established a link with a neighboring school and decided to have many more games, including netball, hockey, and touch rugby in the next academic year.

KS1 Swimming Gala

On Tuesday 14th May Years 3 to 6 competed in the Interhouse Swimming Gala.

The children had been put into seeded races across all four year groups and the children raced in breaststroke, butterfly, backstroke and freestyle.

The children showed determination and resilience in all of the races and had such fun at the same time.

A favourite race is always the rubber-ring relay which causes lots of splashes, laughter and joy!

The event finished with the relays, which were very competitive and super speedy!

The results were very close but Buaya, the green crocodiles came out as winners on the day!

On Tuesday 21st May it was the turn of the youngest Prep Scholars to swim!

All of the children in EYFS up to Year 2 competed for their house and loved putting their swimming skills to the test.

The children particularly enjoyed the seahorse races at the end of the event.

U9 & U11 Girls & Boys Badminton

Primary KLSL Badminton Tournament 2024

20/05/24

Epsom College in Malaysia hosted the 2024 KLSL Division 2 Primary Badminton tournament with teams joining from Straits, Maverick and Sunway international schools. Organised as a team event, Epsom competed in U9 and U11 categories. The standard of play and passion for Badminton was extremely high with all players working hard to win points for their team..

Straits brought a strong group of shuttlers and won the U9 category in straightforward fashion. Epsom A finished with a bronze medal and Epsom B were fourth. The U11 competition was more evenly contested but Maverick stood out as the team to beat. Epsom U11’s finished 3rd overall and a close tie against Straits proved to be the difference between 2nd and 3rd place.

This was a fantastic experience for the Epsom players and a great opportunity to play in a team event together. An U11 fixture is scheduled for 13th June at King Henry 8th College which is eagerly anticipated.

Under the guidance of Diego Gutierrez Ramos, UEFA Pro License holder and LALIGA’s Technical Director, our students will receive unparalleled personalised coaching and reap the benefits from his years of experience working with aspiring young players.

Our Programme is segregated into two age groups (U12-U14 and U16-U19) that will receive 6 and 9 hours of weekly training respectively. These sessions are supplemented with fitness, tactical video analysis and theory tailored to age-specific demands and objectives.
